About Mays & Schnapp

A History of Excellence

The founders of Mays & Schnapp, anesthesiologist Dr. Kit S. Mays and neurologist Dr. Moacir Schnapp, met while working at the University of Tennessee. Being pioneers in the field of pain, they introduced the multimodal treatment of pain as a medical specialty to Memphis. Their groundbreaking research on chronic pain syndromes was presented at a number of international conferences.

The two physicians began Mays & Schnapp in the early 1980’s and expanded their practice to include a rehabilitation center, creating what is now the oldest and most well-regarded pain management facility in the Mid-South. The practice is based on the belief that the best treatment comes from a multimodal approach to relieve pain, restore function, and improve quality of life.

Mays & Schnapp was first recognized in 1989, and continues today, to be certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facility (CARF). It is the only CARF certified interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation outpatient program in the state and entire region. This certification represents the highest level of accreditation that can be given to any organization.

Dr. Mays retired from Mays and Schnapp in 2019, though his philosophy lives on at the practice.

Dr. Schnapp’s interest extends to the design, development and production of rehabilitation instruments including the iPosture, an electronic posture correcting device, as well as the first computer assisted therapies for treatment of complex regional pain syndrome.

Today, the experienced medical team at Mays & Schnapp consists of three pain management specialists, four physician assistants, and a nurse practitioner. They provide compassionate, comprehensive, state-of-the-art pain treatment for patients experiencing acute or chronic pain. The Center’s multimodal treatment philosophy may include any combination of nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord stimulation, physical therapy, medication management, and other therapies. The team at Mays & Schnapp brings advanced, individualized care to help patients manage their pain.

The practice, located in East Memphis, expanded in 2020 to add a second location in Southaven, Mississippi. Mays & Schnapp Neurospine and Pain remains steadfast to its founders’ successful treatment philosophy that is based on achieving the best treatment through a multimodal approach to relieve pain, restore function, and improve quality of life.
